As part of a 14-part reissue series, Mute presents Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds 1996 album Murder Ballads, remastered and overseen by former Bad Seed and founder member Mick Harvey. The album reflects the original release with both the cover and the printed inner sleeves reproduced in facsimile. A commercial and critical success, Murder Ballads features new and cover versions of traditional songs telling stories about crimes committed out of passion. It’s the peculiar tension between major chords and morbid fables when the album is at its best (The Kindness Of Strangers, Death Is Not The End), and of course Cave’s and Kylie Minogue’s über-hit ‘Where the Wild Roses Grow’, based on the 19th century traditional ‘Down in the Willow Garden’.
