On their thirteenth studio album, Australian veterans Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds put their full range of musical influences on display. After working with him on their last full-length Nocturama, they rehired producer Nick Launey, but said goodbye to founding member Blixa Bargeld who was replaced by Gallon Drunk. Recorded in Paris, released in 2004 and reissued in 2013, the double album brings to light the group’s sense of arrangement: whereas the first part, Abattoir Blues, draws on the energetic roots of rock’n’roll and the disillusioned anger of blues, The Lyre of Orpheus takes its moment to contemplate; it’s the album’s evening dress, its quieter pieces seem lenient towards the outbreaks of the album’s first chapter.
