Two great voices in contemporary experimental electronica team up for a new collaborative LP on the Mute label entitled Paper Masks. What were once casual correspondences between friends slowly (over the course of five years, that is) began to take shape as an album of nimble, yet soothing ambience. Phew handles the bulk of the production here, crafting Danielle De Picciotto’s tender vocalizations in both English and German across these vivid soundscapes and also sampling other bits into extra musical texture as well. Tracks like the frigid ‘Iceberg’ sculpt noise until it recalls an arctic chill so striking you’ll shiver no matter the temperature outside.
