After gaining attention through his release on Giles Peterson's Brownswood Bubblers and his Astral Black imprint, UK producer Jon Phonics readies White Neckle for First Word Records. The diverse EP has many reference points, starting with ‘Face Of Spades’ that draws on SND’s glitch constructions but with added space funk and the sleazier, bit-crushed boogie of ‘Afternoon Delite’. From here proceedings move from moody hip-hop on ‘Give It Up’ to soulful downbeat (‘Yes’) to melodic, atmospheric beats on ‘Candy Coupe’ that point to the Brainfeeder camp.
