Hotflush head Scuba is back on his own label with the second instalment in the Phenix series. As with the inaugural edition, Phenix 2 sees the UK producer shift to a darker sound in contrast to the more party-starting material of his earlier output. Opening with the reductionist atmospherics of ‘Aphids’ Scuba plunges us down into dark warehouse territory with the writhing stomp of ‘Choke’. On the flip-side the unbridled acidic jabs of ‘Solitary Confinement’ draw on the paranoid technoid output of Rrose whereas closing cut ‘Distance’ is a dub-heavy arrangement with warm, sub aquatic chord rushes.
