After over a decade of creative partnership, Subaerial was Lucy Railton and Kit Downes’ first collaborative album together, where the wild and the tender hold hands in wonder. SN Variations call it “gloriously slippery”, as the two transform their instruments into scintillating walls of culminating chords and low frequency murmurs with elastic ease. The frozen organ tones of ‘Down to the Plains’ quietly shape the track’s harmonic profile while cello lurches and groans, switching places as Railton’s plucks tiptoe over Downes’ flowing whistles, their timbres morphing impossibly into growling, buzzing seas and distant clanging bells.
