The first release on new reissue label Death Is Not The End, Angola Prison Spirituals is a collection of recordings originally released in 1959. A gathering of songs recorded in Louisiana State Penitentiary, then the largest maximum security joint in the US. Robert Pete Williams, who was doing time for murder and would go on to a lengthy recording career, features on many of these tracks, alongside inmates who weren't so lucky, such as Tom Dutson, Roosevelt Charles and Robert 'Guitar' Welch. An essential curio, that fascinates and rewards in equal measure.
