After courting a range of labels, from Patrice Scott’s Sistrum to Steffi’s Dolly, XDB is back on Echocord with the Afrikk EP, his second for the imprint since the debut Apari release. Each of the four cuts blur the boundaries between house and techno, instead focusing of bass heavy constructions with an ingrained sense of groove. ‘Burgund’ is the most polished whereas ‘Indywa’ picks up the pace, featuring some rougher percussion laid down on a thick dub base. The title cut ‘Afrikk’ is closer to some of the rougher house cuts seeping out of NY basements from the likes of DJ Qu or Fred P but its Philogresz’s remix that gets the nod due to its precision drilled hi-hats and warm chord backing.
