On their fourth album and third release on Matador, Toronto sextet Fucked Up take a more melodic approach to their hardcore punk. Glass Boys excites with unexpected changes of meter, puzzles with hymnal choruses and energises with compelling drums. Going for a more condensed track list and reduced song lengths compared to earlier albums, Fucked Up all the more emphasise the entertaining side of their sound. Their lo-fi aesthetics are charming as ever – as is Damian Abraham when he growls out his lyrics. The overall lyrical theme is personal integrity: something they’ve surely kept it intact with this release.
