In his continued study of the drone artform, Stephen O’Malley has been drawn ever closer to the pipe organ through his collaborations with partner Kali Malone. Spheres Collapser, his first album for Malone’s own XKatedral label, presents his organ studies in full force, performed with her as well as Frederikke Hoffmeier (aka Puce Mary/and half of Croatian Amor). The full spectrum of the organ’s ecstatic infrasound and activation of the air it moves dominates these compositions, its tones layering up with geyseric puffs and tangible waveform oscillations until everything is serrated and shimmering in a slow motion collapse, drifting out in the smokier endless throb of the second phase.
