Hotflush bossman Paul Rose aka Scuba returns with his first solo release since 2012. Much like the titular phoenix, this EP represents a stylistic rebirth for Rose, who sets aside the party starters in favour of a moodier, more introspective sound. The rueful synths and handclaps of opener ‘Throb’ segue into ‘Cyanide’, a throbbing techno exercise that still manages to get reflective thanks to atmospheric pad work. ‘Time Relentless Time’ showcases yet another new side to the Scuba sound, pairing a slowing burning instrumental with dreamy female vocal, while the rhythmic ‘Curious Paradox’ features congas, cowbells, claps and other percussion layered to perfection.
