After a couple of appearances as a remixer, Ewan Smith, the producer behind Youandewan, displays his sense of classic house arrangements on his self-titled EP. Having previously released on Will Saul’s Simple Records, he stays within the family: Aus Music is Simple Records’ sister label, and Youandewan’s fresh sound sits well here. ‘Tino’s’ stripped hi-hats, claps and looming sound effects successfully build up tension that surrenders under a banging acid synth line. The soft musical tones of ‘Alright Son’ even have a loungy feel to them. The lively bass line of ‘FM Jam’ adds a bit of funk to the mix: André rounds up the EP by exposing the song’s happy vocal sample over jamming electric piano chords.
