Aaron Funk returns with his first album as Venetian Snares since 2010's My So-Called Life. His characteristic adeptness for producing vigorous and complex drum programming and detailed rhythmic structures that never quite twist in the way you expect is very much on show. The general tone of the album though is somehow grander in scale than much of what he has done before, the strings and jazzy inflections carrying a heightened gothic drama, as well as a strong cast of singers - including Funk himself in places - adding a strong emotional arc to the intricate musical barrage.
