In the seven years since his 2018 Addendum to Screen Memories, John Maus has been biding his time, touring and mulling over themes of honesty and grief. Later Than You Think arrives with Maus’s conclusions on these thoughts, delivered in starlit darkwave tinged synthpop with reverent tones. A dependable quartet of bass guitar, drum machines, synths, and vocals powers this album, whether trilling on ‘Tonight’ or strolling through syrupy heartache on ‘Pick It Up’, or with ghostly echoes peeking out from behind snappy beats and jangly bass strumming low on ‘Because We Built It’.
