Led by Jan Anderzén, Finnish experimental collective Kemialliset Ystävät have defied genre classification since their inception in the late 1990’s; their latest LP Alas Rattoisaa Virtaa is no different, fusing a potent blend of electronic and acoustic improvisation with a dynamic psychedelic edge. Swirling electronics open up on ‘Alempana Kuin Enkelit’, gradually bringing the piece together with a loose percussive groove whilst ‘Nijura’ pushes things further, colliding unchained guitar chords against glitching interference and operatic chants. ‘Hetkinen’ is more considered, gently easing erratic synth play into singular piano and xylophone keys whilst ‘Vetta Yarahille’ represents a busier arrangement that never sounds overly cluttered.
