Genres

This Soul Jazz Records collection displays the Afro-Caribbean genre in its many variations. Featuring both artists from different Caribbean islands and their subsequent progression in the USA, the UK and Panama, the compilation includes recordings made between 1955 and 1969. With Calypso originating as a form of storytelling, the songs bear witness to the times’ events: Panama’s Lord Cobra sings about the first man on the moon and a heart transplant operation; Lord Ivanhoe takes on the problems of the Cold War in ‘Lift The Iron Curtain’. Brownie from the Virgin Islands shows the genre’s truly humorous side by singing about wanting to be a bed bug so he could bite young ladies.
