Emir Timur Tokdemir has floated through the electronic world relatively underground, yet his influence is keenly felt. He’s the mastermind producer behind many Drain Gang tracks, with collaborations among the PC Music school, Charli XCX, Toxe, and Torus. His debut album as Mechatok is a long time coming: Wide Awake solidifies the new sounds of dance pop that he’s been defining for over a decade. What sounds like a minimal arrangement is populated by layers upon layers of clean cut rhythms, prickly fizzing synths, and ultra glitched out vocal clips, with chiptune synths rubbing against jagged electropop and dangerously deep dubstep wobbles, unwinding glitchy synthpop clockwork and idiosyncratic digital inflections on techno, garage, ambient, and more.
