Producer Craig Leon's 1981 LP Nommos (first released on John Fahey's Takoma label) is an often overlooked classic that holds an enduring allure. Leon is best known for his production work on landmark New York albums from Suicide, The Ramones and Blondie. Nommos though sounds nothing like the rough punk of those albums, and is instead closer to the drone and minimalism of post-modernist composers like Terry Riley, but with these ideas given shape using a pallette of richly textured, proto-industrial electronics. The result is an album of immersive loops, at turns both meditative and exultant. It's an extraordinary record that still sounds resolutely current, and like nothing else from the time it was made.
