The Africa Seven label dusts off some previously unheard magic from the prodigious Francis Bebey vault with this new compilation entitled Trésor Magnétique. The comp’s title translating to Magnetic Treasure is apt since these tracks were salvaged from old tapes recently found at Bebey’s son’s home. Despite their status, these recordings capture the Cambodian multi-hyphenate at his very best. Tracks like the funky Drum Machine version of ‘Quand Le Soleil Est La’ somehow sound both otherworldly and out of time, almost uncannily combining elements of the era’s pop and dance music with traditional instrumentation and vocal stylings. Cleaned up for release at Abbey Road, these archival recordings add even more magic to Bebey’s storied musical legacy.
