Following their sprawling opus Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You and a lineup change, Big Thief retreat to single LP format for their sixth album, yet Double Infinity is no less grand in scope. The band condense its predecessor’s roadtripping recording process into a concise 40ish minutes of layered heaps of instrumentation and soft spoken lyrics that unload all of life’s experiences and contradictions. Sunwashed flurries of drums and wobbling guitars are all twang on bright folk rock tracks like ‘Los Angeles’, celebrating togetherness, while they form a deep river of downtempo sound on ‘No Fear’, trudging through slack bass riffs, and cyclical lyrics that push guitars to bite ever harder.
