Music has always played an integral role in the work of artist and digital art pioneer Davide Quayola. His installations and artistic practice include work with photography, digital programming and performance art as well as moving and still images. Quayola - Sounds from Strata Series sees the musical scores from his Strata films, specially composed by Plaid, Mira Calix, Autobam and Matthias Kispert, pressed on to vinyl by Hong Kong-based label NLS Records. The Strata films involve Quayola exploring the unseen geometries and topologies that exist within classical art through the use of custom built software that uncovers these elements within the paintings. The music for the project was composed specifically for these films, and the artists involved have created a set of stirring music, even when considered beyond the context of the art this was made to accompany. The release opens with the playful Strata 1 from Italian musician Autobam, while his collaboration with Warp artist Mira Calix on Strata 2 is more melancholy in tone, strings underpinning electronic glitches. Fellow Warp artists Plaid provide the Strata 3, a track of dazzling, celestial detail, while London based composer Matthias Kispert rounds off the release with three tracks, all beautifully rich in mood. Housed in stunning gatefold vinyl, it's a very special collection, just as fascinating as the project it came from.
