David Chatton Barker presents a beautiful release of brass band music and field recordings for the Folklore imprint, which aims to catalogue quintessential Britishness through an ongoing series of eccentric projects. Visiting 12 stations and taking short recordings of the sound environment, Barker then made accompanying pieces for the Exeter Brass Band, all of which combine into two short pieces taking their names from the corresponding stations. What is most impressive about Twelve Stations’ is its ability to summon up a poignant British nostalgia without lapsing into mawkishness, with the brass band pieces charmingly crisp yet distant below layers of train fuzz.
