Breakout star Chet Faker drops his debut album, and following the success of contemporary James Blake it's hard not to imagine a similar future for this Australian. 'Talk Is Cheap' is a neo-blues pop number that sees repeated sax lines thrown under Rhodes keys and Faker's lower register emoting. The pop tracks here are interrupted by brief vignettes that display real electronic nous. Kilo Kish features on the back-and-forth emotional singalong 'Melt', a late-night anthem in waiting. Faker's vocals vary from earnestly pained to a sort of soaring wonder. On 'Blush' he waits till the closing moments before opening his mouth at all. '1998' is a funk-laden jam, while the album closes on the drunken swing of 'Dead Body'. An intriguing talent here, one that could go far.
