Night Slugs boss Bok Bok returns with the funk-tinged single ‘Melba’s Call’, featuring vocals from DC soul singer Kelela. The track is impressive in its unabashed extravagance, with strident synth stabs and shanking funk guitars piercing through skittering half-step percussion. The producer’s marriage of hefty bass surges and Kelela’s commanding vocal delivery is admirable, resulting in a mixture as likely to impress a dancefloor as festival stages and mainstream radio. For Bok Bok to bring his refined productions to a larger audience without artistic compromise is an achievement which shouldn’t be sniffed at.
