Genres

Not long since turning everyone’s head inside out on his baffling The Trilogy Tapes EP, Dublin-based Ian McDonnell AKA Eomac returns to Killekill with Spectre – his debut LP. As with his previous works, Spectre is a diffusion of a range of different genres melted down and set into a brooding, techno mould with the huge slabs of blotchy bass on opener ‘Su Riddim’ setting the dark tones that follow. The Irish man shows off his understanding of textures and sound design on the slo-mo gritted number ‘Rainmaker’ with its frayed stomp and distant echos whereas ‘Shell Of Dark’ is a completely unrelenting monster that should be approached with caution. ‘Rising 3’ chops up some nostalgic ‘ardcore drums and vocals and offsets them with a barrage of off-kilter bleeps whilst ‘Squink’ finally wraps things up with its stripped, contorting sluggish chug.
