Erika Anderson, better know as EMA, follows her celebrated 2011 debut with a larger, more confident, thematically sprawling second album, this time for Matador Records. The Future’s Void focuses on the digital nightmare that is our modern existence, in various different forms. She takes on virtual alienation and mass surveillance on crunchy, Nine Inch Nails-flavoured lead single ‘Satellites’ and delicate ballad ‘3Jane’. She also displays an affinity for the sci-fi classics on monolithic rocker ‘Cthulu’ and the animalistic ‘Neuromancer’. On the cathartic ‘Smoulder’ and grungy ‘So Blonde’, Anderson sets aside futuristic themes and tackles personal issues, sure to make day one fans very happy.
