Clay Rendering is a collaborative effort between former Wolf Eyes member Mike Connelly and his wife Tara. Having worked together as part of The Haunting, the duo have developed a strong partnership when it comes to creating deathly, scorched soundscapes. Waters Above The Firmament is no different, with the opening title track setting the dark mood perfectly with eerie ambient drones and a sense of dread in the air. From here things move to the thick, slurry-like guitar chords on ‘Temple Walking’ to the brutish drums and nihilistic vocals of ‘The Pest’. Lastly we’re presented with ‘Myrrh Is Rising’ where the beautiful, ritualistic piano chords provide some let off from the terror of the pieces before.
