Chicago-born, New York-based eight-piece Hypnotic Brass Ensemble compiles a selection of jazz-inflicted, hip-hop cuts for Fly The Customs Prelude. Containing seven brothers with a direct lineage to the original Sun Ra Arkestra member Phil Cohran, the group’s modern-sounding live instrument-led works are outstanding; from the cool swagger of opener ‘Planet Of The Apes’ to the laid-back hip-hop soul of ‘Exchange Rate’. Rapper Aquilla Sadallah adds his cool lyrics to the classy ‘Fly’ with the rousing horns of ‘Hornet’s Nest’ wrapping things up with a bang.
