Just in time to mark their 10th anniversary as a unit, San Francisco DJ/production collective 40 Thieves drop their double-sized debut on Leng Records. The group capitalises on the full-length format, fluidly moving from one funk-based style to another. ‘Les Planetes’ and ‘Yamobeecha’ sport fat bass lines and polyrhythmic beats that channel early-80’s post-punk acts like ESG, while the pumping synth-arpeggios on ‘Carousel’ invoke New Order’s dance-floor focused material. Other highlights include big-beat killer ‘Face Full Of Fur’, sweaty Italo-Disco number ‘You Wanna’, and the ice-cold funk of ‘Backward Love’.
