Sam Shepherd and Alexander Nut’s Eglo Records have found a gem here: the debut double-header from Melbourne one-man-band and general art dude Kirkis. Described as “the spirit of Frank Zappa trapped in an answering machine” this is a strong introduction to his synth-tastic style, with fizzing Tron-like machines and plucky guitar getting down among IDM beats on the title track, which Kirkis somehow treats as a backing track for his soft, melodic vocals. On side B, ‘Oh Serene Zoltar’ takes the brass Blade Runner synths and footwork percussion that made Kuedo a star and mixes in filthy bass, the result like a radio-friendly dubstep tune being sent into space. Whoever Kirkis is and whatever he’s on, we hope this is the start of an equally colourful discography.
