Following acclaimed debut album ‘Nonfiction’, The Range graces the Donky Pitch imprint with new EP ‘Panasonic’, an impressive selection of eclectic tracks completed while touring the US. Opener ‘Slow Build’ is a deep house number which shows flair in its use of raw male exercise grunts and acoustic drum samples, eschewing run of the mill elements, while elsewhere these idiosyncratic choices manifest themselves in a number of cuts taking their cue from gangsta rap, trip-hop and jungle. ‘Tricky’ shifts from washes of melancholy strings and twinkling pianos to an itching footwork-inflected breakbeat, while ‘Ed Reed Jersey’ constructs vocal acrobatics from a rap sample, and ‘Washingtons’ seems to mesh all these element together into cut-up madness.
