Island reissues the timeless debut from singer/songwriter Nick Drake. Produced by Joe Boyd, Five Leaves Left finds Drake backed by members of British folk groups Pentangle and Fairport Convention, making light, almost pastoral folk that only hinted at the depression he battled in his personal life. Drake’s delicate guitar style and soft, lisping voice are in peak form on smirking opener ‘Time Has Told Me’, the piano-led ‘Man In A Shed’ and jazzy closer ‘Saturday Sun’. ‘Way To Blue’ and ‘Day Is Done’ utilize lush string arrangements typical of the day, with sombre, undeniably beautiful results.
