Queens rapper/singer/producer Yaya Bey makes her debut on the drink sum wtr label with a new LP entitled do it afraid. Bey is behind the decks again here, though some colour is added from members of jazz fusionists BADBADNOTGOOD and Butcher Brown and their presence is felt in the lithe grooves that fold house, suco, and other influences into the mix. Bey’s voice takes centre stage throughout these tracks though, gliding along the surface of the neo-soul crooner ‘raisins’ like a wave cresting just beyond the horizon.
