Soundway Records are back with another fine find, the unearthed recordings from West African dance band Muyei Power. The fiery funk unit, who made these recordings while on tour in the US in the mid-70s, possessed a potent sound that drew on several strands of African music as well as American guitar-rock. Fast, furious opener ‘Wali Bena’ is an assault of tight riffs, powerful percussion, tasteful sax, and soulful chants. ‘Yamba Sowe’ balances a chunky drum beat with bright keys and light-hearted calls from the band, while on ‘Be Patient’, a snaking Mali-flavoured guitar melody makes way for a sweaty, shaker-fuelled break down.
