The long-running Austin experimental group Shit and Shine is back with a new LP (and first on Austin label 12XU) entitled Mannheim HBF. S&S mastermind and sole continuous member Craig Clouse is on his own here, exploring zones that edge closer to spartan dub and glitch techno or at least the synth heavy side of krautrock given its title than ever before under the moniker. The album’s dual epics in opener ‘Rorbach’ and “Aachen HBF’ favour simple hammering drum production that lulls you into a trance as the electronics buzz and snap behind the beat, while the title track’s busy kicks seem to fall in and out of phase, almost as if you’re hearing it the music from two different speaker systems.
