Hamburg experimentalist Nils Frahm follows up last year’s Day EP with its accompanying Night on his longtime label LEITER. Much like its running mate, Night was recorded simply on his custom-made Klavins M450 upright piano, eschewing the more intricate arrangements and treated electronics of his other recent work in favour of the gracefully nimble piano lines on which Frahm originally received acclaim. There’s still some mischief at play here though, as Frahm takes the familiar frameworks of chamber music and neoclassical only to recalibrate, reshape, and mutate them to fit his singular playing style and musical voice.
