Taking its name from the term 19th century naturalist John Muir gave to the Sierra Nevada, S. Carey’s ‘Range Of Light’ sees the musician once again on top form, blending jazz, classical and ambient influences inventively and evocatively. ‘Alpenglow’ is a gorgeous piano ballad, with Carey’s vocals delivered with breathy intimacy, while ‘The Dome’ sees him expanding his songs with orchestral strings and winds and folky guitar line. ‘Creaking’, however, is the highlight - a smooth and jazzy instrumental which recalls the finer moments of Four Tet’s ‘Rounds’.
