The latest double drop from Portraits GRM finds Beatrice Dillon exploring the Japanese philosophical concept of basho, an abstract space of interconnected experience, while Hideki Umezawa uncovers Bernard and François Baschet’s custom instruments and sound sculptures. It’s Basho vs Baschet, a phonetic coincidence! But also testament to the similarities between two composers working with vastly different concepts and instruments, yet resulting in pieces that are alive and constantly reconfiguring with exciting ecosystems of curious sounds that morph and fuse. Dillon’s digital string plucks teeter across timbres in mirage like fashion, injected with verve, parallel to Umezawa’s crystalline thunks and synthetic chimes, resonating metal drones and electric buzzes, tiptoeing around the negative space the hulking Baschet structures command.
