Matt Carlson and Jonathan Sielaff return to the estimable Thrill Jockey imprint for their second album of music for modular synthesiser and bass clarinet, entitled ‘Seer’. The album impresses most in its ability to blur acoustic and electronic sound sources, with the listener often unable to tell where the clarinet sounds end and the synth sounds begin. ‘Serene Velocity’ is a case in point, where an understated and slowly-expanding synth pattern seems to have subtle swells of bass clarinet in its lower frequencies, though it could just as easily be an illusion. For fans of classic Krautrock, or the more recent analogue renaissance in electronic music, ‘Seer’ will be a pleasure.
