Mestre Cupijo e Seu Ritmo
Analog Africa
Catalogue Number
Release Date
May 5, 2014

From Analog Africa comes another fine, funky compilation, this time from Brazilian bandleader Mestre Cupijó. Siriá, named after the brass-heavy North Brazilian music that Cupijó popularised, is culled from six studio albums released between 1975 and 1982. The always-festive arrangements jump all around the Caribbean stylistically. Opener ‘Mingau de Acai’ and ‘Farol do Marajo’ pair calypso flavoured grooves with distinct horns and male vocals, while ‘Caboclinha do Igapo’ features a shaker-led, samba swing. As referenced in its title, instrumental ‘Mambo do Martelo’ borrows from Cuban Mambo, and ‘Ventinho do Norte’ is a riotous take on Mexican mariachi music.
