Genres
Finnish experimentalist Merja Kokknen AKA Islaja returns with her spellbinding brand of avant-folk on new LP SUU. Here debuting on Monika Records, Islaja pushes a much more electronic-orientated sound than her previous works, overlapping confident lyrics on a buoyant, synthesized bass line on ‘See No Sun’ and dealing in drifting machine ambiance on the airy instrumental ‘Temporary Haven’. Much darker is ‘Travel Light’ where vocals are delivered with venom, merging with swirling synth chords for a blistering combination.
