Arthur Russell’s otherworldly masterpiece is finally given a remastered double-vinyl re-release, courtesy of Audika. By far his most experimental work, World Of Echo is a murky mixture of reverbed vocals, droning cello and slapped percussion that sounds as if it was recorded inside of a storm cloud. With cryptic lyrics that are often hard to make out, Russell’s impassioned vocals are used like another instrument, the key ingredient in this sonic soup. While it’s best listened to all the way through, highlights include the epic, unhinged cello work on ‘Soon To Be Innocent Fun/Let’s See’, the woozy, feather-light ‘Hiding Your Present From You’ and trippy, tabla-infused ‘The Name Of The Next Song’.
