Golden Donna follows his strong 2012 debut on Not Not Fun with an expansive second set on the like-minded 100% Silk imprint. Golden Donna is the solo project of Wisconsin journeyman guitarist Joel Shanahan, who swaps his acoustic for a stack of vintage keyboards and makes the sort of atmospheric, retro-futuristic soundscapes that are the specialty of his new label. Opener ‘Remember’ is Shanahan’s take on deep house, its euphoric synthline and surprisingly lively bass obscured by a thin cloud of haze. On ‘Pale Dream Rider’, layer after layer of gorgeous keyboard are laid over a slow-motion groove, while the riotous ‘Bloodsucker’ ups the energy and tempo without sacrificing melody.
