Optimo offer up a varied EP on their own Optimo Music imprint traversing dub, krautrock and funk influences with a punkish abandon. ‘Goya’s Skull’ proceeds with a relaxed funk, with pitched percussion keeping an itching groove moving underneath layers of low dubby brass, and saturated vocal samples. ‘Untitled From North Africa’ is a smoother jazz number, with a distant sax solo romping over a shuffling 5-beat groove. Judging by the producers’ formidable catalogue, one can expect a similar set of beautifully rendered surprises on the EP’s B-side.
