Returning to the venerated Tresor imprint, Surgeon continues with the minimal gear setup of his last few releases, honing in on lush, immersive sound design that he can reliably recreate during live sets. Nostalgia and pragmatism meet in tracks like the caustic ‘Soul Fire’ that plays like a fresh update to the harsh minimal techno Surgeon has become notorious for perfecting. The second half of Shell~Wave adds a few new wrinkles as well, as the dizzying bird-song-like synths on ‘Empty Cloud’ display some newfound toys in the Surgeon box that could still tear a hole through any speaker.

Surgeon is a name you can trust. When it comes to incisive, cold-steel precision techno, well there’s few if any better than this UK master. As a steerer of Birmingham party-turned-genre-signifier House of God he and his fellow compatriots brought a darker strain of techno into the picture with roots in punk, industrial, metal, and all the ways those heavier movements intersect. But it's his work as a producer that has really shifted the tides, netting classic LPs and remixes that have touched on everything from noise to ambient to hardcore and back again, all bearing his signature blend of piercing melodic clarity and exacting rhythm.

With over three decades in the business, Surgeon has finally taken stock of his triumphs, resulting in Shell~Wave, his most introspective LP yet.
