Back in 1996 “Doc” Scott McIlroy was a trailblazing drum ‘n’ bass DJ, often seen surrounded by NHS tags (Nasty Habits), decks and his graffiti crew. ‘Shadow Boxing’ was his moody eight-minute masterpiece and it’s been given a new lease of life by London’s Jim Coles, whose remix as Om Unit adds kung fu samples, tumbling digital percussion and horror movie strings for a more cinematic feel. It’s backed by a remastered version of the original, all crunchy, fast-paced beats and drowsy overpowering bass. Almost 20 years old and it still as fresh as a daisy - though once capable of shattering speakers.
