Tracking the “incomprehensible scale of time” through complex ever-changing sequences, Russell Haswell continues to sonify the politics and peculiarities of modern living on his latest record Deep Time. Though inspired by geological research and human measurement of time, Deep Time is situated staunchly in the present moment, peering backwards as if perched over a bottomless pit: elongated eras are represented by elasticated tempos, perception bent with morphing metallic sounds, and melodic left turns cut through the familiar patterns. It’s an academic exercise as much as it’s for the dancefloor, as a squeaky lead synth peeks its head over the relentless pummel of ‘Atropine’, and heavy thumps tear apart the sizzle of ‘Satellite Killer’, raising the track to a boil.
