Iris Silver Mist possesses the kind of blue-skied cloudy release that a spritz of perfume gives. It’s fitting, then, that the inception of Jenny Hval’s ninth album was aroma, dispersing throughout the bedroom as she daydreamed in the absence of touring, complex base notes unravelling over time in the cotton soft quilts of strings and feathery vocals. Hval’s keen ear for linguistic subtleties is turned to harmonic grace as brass kites glide and drums swish and sway, in thesis like explorations of “pandemic birthdays”, the nature of performance, stasis and nomadness, being there and not there, that are suddenly tossed into a chillout rave with crisp, fragrant breakbeats reawakening the senses.
