Original released in 2010 via Type, Swans’ album My Father Will Guide Me Up A Rope To The Sky makes a welcome return on the brilliant Mute label. ‘Jim’ is a curious combination of a raunchy, lunging groove, disembodied mandolin, and a crooning vocal which channels Scott Walker at his best, while cuts like ‘My Birth’ and ‘Eden Prison’ see the group unleashing heavier rock numbers. The album’s full scope can be best seen in the tracks which open and close it, with ‘No Words/No Thoughts’ opening with swarms of tubular bells subsumed by thrashing guitars and ‘Little Mouth’ convincingly changing the tone with a fragile and lilting ballad.
