Marquis Hawkes’ fourth EP for acid house label Dixon Avenue Basement Jams is another helping of crisp, bass-heavy grooves set to deep rhythms. ‘Honey Kisses’ strings synthesized trumpets over a chopped-up samba beat and Motown samples; ‘Roger Funk’ combines Planet Mu-style breaks over some phaser noises and moody 808s; and ‘Let’s Do It’ gets caught in a house loop whose kid-melody keyboards go back and forth like windscreen wipers.
